A close reading of the Johnson Oatman Jr. text reveals a great depth of sadness and solemnity at the beginning of each verse.  The message becomes brighter as one follows the counsel to ‘count [their] blessings’.  I have most often found myself experiencing these words while on my knees and so this is my attempt to musically paint the text as I have experienced it.
